As we head into Spring, our in-built human instinct tells us that it’s time to de-clutter our house and spruce things up ready for the longer days ahead. It’s also traditionally a time to start looking to buy new things for the home and garden.

March is also National Bed Month, so it’s a perfect time to think about whether your bed is still providing you with a healthy, comfortable night’s sleep – or has it seen better days?

To help you decide, here’s six signs that will tell you if it really is time to think about investing in a new bed or mattress:-

You find yourself rolling into the middle of the bed unintentionally

We all like a cuddle now and again but if you find that you’re getting a little too close to your partner every night, it could be a sign that your bed isn’t providing you with the same level of support that it used to.

You hear things going ‘bump’ in the night

OK, it’s more likely to be a ‘boing’ or a ‘creak’ than a ‘bump’ but you get the message. A noisy mattress or base is a common cause of disturbed nights and will only get worse the longer you leave it.

You wake up with aches and pains

It’s not just a sign that you’re getting older – especially if you went to bed without any aches and pains. If your bed isn’t providing correct anatomical support, your muscles will be working overtime to compensate, resulting in common issues such as back, neck and hip pain.

You are disturbed every time your partner moves in bed

Not only is this a sign that your bed isn’t providing independent support to each user, it’s also a sign that you may well need a bigger bed. A standard UK double size bed, measuring just 4ft 6” wide (or about 135cm) gives each user less than a baby has in a cot! Consider up-sizing to a king size (5ft or 150cm in width) or even a super king size which is 6ft or 180cm in width. You won’t believe the difference it makes to getting an undisturbed night’s sleep.

Your mattress looks lumpy and bumpy

It’s OK if your mattress shows shallow body impressions where you lie – that’s to be expected and is just a sign of the fillings settling and moulding to your individual shape. However, if it shows signs of significant dipping or is misshapen – and is over seven years old – you really should think about buying a new one. In seven years you spend over 20,000 hours in bed.

You find that you sleep better in other beds

Whether that’s in hotels or when you’re visiting friends and relatives, this is a sure sign that your own bed really needs replacing.
